Mathematics for human flourishing : Response

 1. Can you describe 2 places in the chapter that made you stop and think? First: “I don’t like the word success, but people think of me as successful, as if the true measure of my mathematical achievement were the awards I’ve received or the papers I’ve published. “ While most people in the society consider being good at math as a success, most mathematicians truly enjoyed doing math and the external awards are not the most important thing. It should not be described this way. The enjoyment of pure math is more like enjoyment of art. One of friend really liked math and he’s always saying that math is just art. I believe it’s true to some extent. Most high school teachers just treat math as a “method” , a tool. However,  it is a degradation of the higher meanings behind mathematics processes.   Second: “society has not taken seriously its obligation to provide a vibrant mathematics education for everyone.” Certainly. Most teachers do not think that math is somethi...

Symbolic Worlds Response

From the article: As people engage in the activities associated with a figured world and become familiar with it and learn its meanings, they become attuned to actions relevant to the world and to people and types of people that have meaning in it.   People invest themselves in particular figured worlds and learn to be, in the eyes of self and others, a particular sort of actor in that world, such as… One’s actions in the world are informed by the desire to perform or validate such claims to identity.   These are both true. As continued from the previous discussions on Local Matters, people tend to become more “like others”. More than that, they need to “think like others” in order to survive in this society! Or whatever society there is. This again I think could be traced back to ancient times. Consider a really traditional and conservative environment, like in ancient China, if you don’t conform and you don’t play your “role” in the society as pre-determined,...

Local Matters Response

Social identities play a huge part in our daily life. I suggest that it could be traced back to our ancestors who had tribal life. To gain acceptance they need to conform to the group in order to survive. The urge to become more “like others” and the human habit to categorize people into certain category are interesting remaining habits of that kind of life in the wilderness. People need to conform. And they need to find their own place. If one constantly intrudes other’s interests or they look different from others, even though that is one’s personality, one could be punished and determined as an outcast.  As in the article, even though the girl behaves “well” in some people’s opinions because of her activeness in class, as time goes on her “boldness” becomes a bad thing because everyone else does not do that and everyone else does not give “clever contrarian statements”. There are two words here, clever and contrarian. People could allow you to be clever, for some period ...

Inquiry listening

图片
I heard the birds making sounds passing through the trees to the north, they echo to each other. The wind also passes through the trees making a rustling sound. I heard the car to the right passing through, some are very loud. To my south is a bunch of houses and there were people laughing there within their garden, probably having a party. To my west is also some houses, I heard people washing the ground and mopping some leaves.

Reflection

Blog Post: Reflections on Your Practicum and Thoughts on Next Steps Name: ______May Qin__________________________________________ Teaching specialty/specialties: _________Math_____________________________ Highlights of your teaching practicum experience:  Experiences that you remember with a smile (learning, growth, “I love this job!” sorts of things) The kids were very cute. Some would come up to me and say thank you for teaching me. They were so polite and I loved that part. Challenges: Things that were a struggle, perhaps in the “We learn and grow through challenges and hardships” category of “learning experience”                 I think classroom management sometimes were challenging. Getting the children do all the things correctly and on time was hard.                   Ongoing learning: Things that, at the end of your practicum, had you thinking, “I want t...
